Same-Day Discharge Surgery

For patients who have appropriate support at home and no medical reasons to stay in the hospital overnight for close monitoring, going home on the same day of surgery is safe, effective, and results in a more satisfactory experience.

While there are reasons for patients to stay overnight in the hospital, the ability to sleep in your own bed after surgery, in your own home and comfort zone, helps in early recovery after surgery.

This is a decision that is made together at the pre-operative appointment weeks prior to surgery.

 

Rest assured, Dr. Deans' team will focus on making sure you have everything that you need for home preparations, medical equipment, and that you are comfortable to go home on the same day. For those planning for a same day discharge after surgery, you will still need to meet criteria after surgery by successfully completing our post-operative checklist, including:

• Urinating spontaneously.

• Tolerating food and drink.

• Pain is under reasonable control.

• Ambulating safely with physical therapy.

For those who are not candidates for going home on the same day or fail to complete the post-operative checklist, we will ensure you have a comfortable and successful overnight stay.
