Life After Joint Replacement

"The secret to life is having more beginnings than endings."

Dr. Deans' philosophy on lifelong activities after joint replacement differs from some surgeons.

The purpose of undergoing a joint replacement is to Regain your Mobility to Restore your Life.

When we do not move, other medical problems arise.

In the long future with your joint replacement, Dr. Deans encourages you to partake in any activities that keep you moving, keep you healthy, and provide joy to your life.

For some, this is getting on and off the floor with grandkids. For others, it may be walking 12 holes for a round of golf, or weight lifting, or playing pickle ball. Others may want to get back to skiing, jogging, or other high-level activities.

It is important to acknowledge that while orthopedic implants are better now than they have ever been, these are still materials that will wear. Just like the tread on your tires, the more miles you put on them the faster they will wear.

As such it is important to continue following with Dr. Deans or an orthopedic surgeon in your area every 3-5 years for a routine check-up and xrays. It is not uncommon to require a short course of physical therapy on occasion to ensure all the muscles around your joint replacement continue functioning appropriately. This helps you continue to achieve maximal benefit from your joint replacement and optimize your happiness with the joint.

After working together for a safe, effective surgery and optimal outcome from your joint replacement, you will have many, many years of safe function with your joint. For most, their joint replacement will last the remainder of their lives!
